Malala grew up in the Swat Valley, a region where, in 2007, the radical Islamic Taliban took control and, inter alia, imposed a school ban for girls.
By the end of 2008, the eleven-year old Malala began keeping an online diary for the BBC – a report on her daily life, the atrocities of the Taliban and her desire to go to school. In 2009, she appeared in a documentary by the New York Times and emerged more and more in the public with her commitment.
In 2012, the Taliban committed a targeted assassination attempt on the then 15-year-old Malala by shooting her in the head, in a crowded school bus. She survived, seriously injured, and found medical treatment in Pakistan and then in the UK. Malala currently lives with her family in Birmingham and has returned to school. In February 2013, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
